The art of microfading
Light is a phenomenon essential for enjoyment of works of art.
Although it is not possible to appreciate the beauty of art without proper illumination, light is simultaneously one of the main agents of deterioration of objects in exhibition spaces. As the museum community is constantly searching for new and improved ways of attaining the difficult compromise between showcasing and safeguarding the art, physical sciences have recently offered a game-changing tool for precise light policy management – a microfading tester.

The idea of microfading testing was first introduced in 1999. Since then conservators have been assembling their own microfading testers or purchasing DIY kits. The operation of such devices was laborious. Usually, a day of measurements was followed by two days of data processing.
In 2018 Instytut Fotonowy launched a fully automatic Micro Fading Tester that revolutionized conservators’ work. Its intuitive and user friendly software takes over the majority of operations and lets the user focus on the object.
Today Instytut Fotonowy provides state-of-the-art tools for conservators and museum scientists, and defines the world standards of microfadeometry. Find out more about our solutions.
